Membership FAQs

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO BE A VOLUNTEER?

It varies from week to week, but on average, about eight hours per week. Many members enjoy putting in more time, or spending additional time whenever their schedule permits (school vacation, after work, etc).

 

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP?

Lakeside has different membership types. Whichever option you select, we've got plenty of work for you to do!

 

Interior firefighters perform all of the tasks associated with firefighting, including entering burning structures to aggressively fight fires.  Many interior firefighters enjoy the personal discpline, self-determination, and physical exertion necessary for interior fire suppression.

 

Exterior firefighters don't enter burning buildings, but they perform many other important tasks at the scene. For example, exterior firefighters will connect hydrants and assemble hoses, extend ladders and use rescue equipment, perform fire suppression at brush and garbage fires, and do other important tasks.

 

Chauffeurs (drivers) drive the fire trucks and other vehicles. It's an important task - the trucks can't get there if nobody's driving! In addition to driving, chauffeurs operate the water pumps and equipment on the vehicle at the fire scene, and perform basic maintenance of the vehicle and its equipment.

 

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP?

Here are the basic requirements for membership. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact us for more information.

 

- 16 years of age or older

- Live within the town of Monroe

- Pass criminal background check

- Physical examination by fire company physician (no cost to you)

 

AM I TOO YOUNG TO GET INVOLVED?

You can apply for membership starting at 16 years of age. (There are some restrictions on participation for members until they turn 18.)

 

AM I TOO OLD FOR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTING?

You're never to old to make a difference for your community, and not every fire volunteer runs into burning buildings. Commercial drivers, handymen, administrative workers - if you have a commitment, we will find a way to put you to work!

 

HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT TO DO DURING AN EMERGENCY?

We'll provide you with all of the training that you need - at zero cost to you. You'll be enrolled in classes taught by expert instructors, who are certified by New York State. They'll teach you everything that you'll need to know, and you'll be supervised during simulations and drills.

 

HOW LONG UNTIL I CAN ACTUALLY "DO SOMETHING"?

Almost immediately! Once you've been accepted to membership and you've been issued your equipment, we will put you on a response vehicle as soon as the next call is received! And your responsibilities will increase as you gain experience and training.

 

I HAVE A TIGHT WORK/SCHOOL SCHEDULE. WILL I REALLY BE ABLE TO DO THIS?

Obviously, you know whether you can dedicate the time needed to be an active volunteer, but in terms of a schedule, we can accomodate almost any. Whether you work days, evenings, or overnight, or whatever your schedule is, we will do our best to accomodate you. In fact, some of our most active responders are those members who work nights and are available during the hours when our other volunteers are at their "day jobs".

 

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN?

There is NO cost to be a volunteer member. We pay for all necessary uniforms, training, equipment, etc. You may even be eligible for certain tax benefits as a volunteer firefighter (check with your tax professional for details).
